    The way you feel in any given moment can be enhanced or changed by practicing mindfulness. Your spirit experiences what you pay attention to. This means in any situation, any circumstance, you have the opportunity to be mindful and uplift your spirit.

    My husband’s first career was as a funeral director. He shared this story that has always stayed with me… During the burial of a woman who died from cancer, her adult son was deeply sorrowful watching her casket being lowered into the ground. As per her wishes, each person in attendance held a bright orange balloon through the service and released them as they began lowering the casket. The son was so deep in his grief for the loss of his mother that he kept watching her decent. My husband leaned over to him and said, “Look up”. The young man looked at him confused and my husband repeated, “Look up”. The young man looked up and saw the dozens of orange balloons floating up into the clear blue sky. My husband witnessed a transformation that brought tears to his eyes. The young man gazed upward at the ascending orange balloons. A small smile touched his lips while the tears continued to stream down his cheeks. His gaze and his spirit remained looking up. After the service was over, the young man approached my husband, took him by the hands and said, “Thank you. I would have missed it.”

    We always have a choice. You can miss it…. Or you can Look Up!
